All classes held at the Menino Arts Center (The MAC) unless otherwise specified. If you are a Hyde Park Art Association member, you will receive a 10% discount on all classes. If you are not a member but would like to become one, please fill out the Membership Form.

KIDS’ ART CLASSES

Phonemic Awareness Through Art, Movement and Music, ages 5 - 7

Through her experience as a classroom teacher and literacy tutor, Lori will use art projects, music, movement, and games to enhance language fluency. This course is loosely based on the Orton Gillingham method of phonemic awareness, which helps learning through the visual, tactile, auditory and kinesthetic modalities. Materials provided.

Mixed media is the process of combining various art media. All students need is the willingness to discover that they can invent many interesting and different effects. Some of the mediums we will use: paint, charcoal, torn paper, dirt, sand, ink and recycled stuff. Materials provided.

Creative arts workshops in three dimensions. Introduction to the fundamentals of sculpture and form. Learn to make your own inventions in wood, wire and recycled materials. Materials provided.

TEEN/ADULT ART CLASSES

Basic Drawing, ages 15 to adult

A basic drawing class for people just beginning - to others with moderate experience. Learn how to interpret what we see three dimensionally onto a two dimensional surface. Working from still life subjects, students will learn how to construct a composition using pencils on moderate to large paper pads.

How To Make Comic Books, ages 13 to adult

The "nuts and bolts" of telling stories in comic book form. Learn to portray characters with distinctive personalities, facial expressions and body language, in a consistent style in believable settings. Direction, pacing, a sense of "animation," word balloons, page layout and design. Students will illustrate and critique each other's stories.
Materials List: #2 pencils, porous point pens, sharpie markers, heavy drawing paper, bristol board, erasers, ruler.

Learn from the Masters, ages 13 - 18

Discover the secrets of a different master artist each week. Learn how they developed their unique way of seeing and expressing themselves through different methods and materials. Then, create your own inspired artworks. Materials provided.

Abstract Painting, ages 12 to adult

There is more to art than the representational. Over the course of three Saturdays, we will first focus on the study of art fundamentals, including the role that line and shape play in building a composition that is balanced. Secondly, color theory concepts, such as the energy certain colors contain, complimentary colors and color discord. Our attention then will turn to the power that intuition plays in transforming these elements into a work of abstract art. The instructor will give demonstrations and group critique. ADULT ART CLASSES

Monday Mornings with Paul, all levels

Ongoing free open classroom will continue in memory of artist Paul Nolan. Bring your coffee, your work: paint, doodle, and network. All artists are welcome. No instructor. Free.

Fused Glass Workshop, all levels
MON, 7:00 – 9:00pm

Glass Fusing combines color, texture and Light in a beautiful from. Students will design jewelry, cut glass, assemble shapes and embellish with glass frit, stringer and bits of dichroic glass. No experience necessary! Each piece is fused in a kiln to 1450 degree. Necklaces, earrings, key chains, and bracelet charms are possible. For advanced students, plates and picture frames.

Painting 2, adults

Students should have some experience in painting with a desire to learn more about figure painting or landscapes.

Learning to Use Your Digital Camera, adult

This class will focus on learning your camera’s functions so that you can move beyond your presets and take better pictures. Topics to be discussed will include file formats like JPEG and RAW; exposure and metering; and basic photographic technique. Chinese Sumi-e Painting Workshop, all levels

Express your personal interpretation of nature through traditional Chinese ink painting on rice paper. You will learn how to write your name in characters and do simple paintings of flowers, trees, birds, and landscapes.. All levels welcome. Materials: brushes for Chinese ink/watercolor painting, ink, rice paper, small ink dish, a large dish, paper towels, water containers Instructor: Tsun Ming Chmielinski teaches workshops and private students in pastels, oils, and sumi-e ink as well as displays her work in art shows throughout the year.

Creating Art for Your Sacred Space, adult

Utilizing sacred sounds and images in guided visualizations and meditation, class members will develop their own personal iconography. Participants will share inspiration and personal stories in the creation of personal artistic expression. Students will have the opportunity to create paintings with a variety of materials, many of which are found in the home or in nature.
